Brushless Electric Motor Controllers for UAVs and Payloads

The electronics department of UVR LLC completed a cycle of works on adapting standard controllers of brushless electric motors to the features used in helicopter-type unmanned aerial vehicles.

Brushless motor controllers convert the DC voltage from batteries into a three-phase AC voltage, implement various motor control functions (modes of stabilization of the motor current, its rotation speed, etc.), adjusting the voltage and current supplied to the motor. The controllers are operated via CAN, UART interfaces and by means of a PWM signal.

The adapted controller type can be applied to UAV electric motors used for various purposes.

The UAV tail rotor motor controller is located in the motor module casing and represents a single structure with it. The controller software is adapted to the operation of the tail rotor with self-expanding blades. This controller is serially installed on the UAV “ELECTRON 7”.

Brushless Electric Motor Controllers for UAVs and Payloads

Till now the prototype of the UAV main rotor motor controller has been developed, adjusted and tested. On bench tests the long-term electric power of the controller has reached 3 kW.

Also, a brushless electric motor with this controller is used in the winch developed by UVR LLC. The software of this payload is adapted to the peculiarities of cargo lifting and lowering by the light UAVs.

New Application Options for the Radiation Monitoring System Based on the UAV “ELECTRON 7”

On February 16-17, 2023, St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University “LETI” hosted the International Practical Conference “Intelligent Border Checkpoint in Russia and the World: Competence-Based Approach to Creation” (IBCP 23).

As part of the forum, UE “ATOMTEX” (Minsk) presented a report “Mobile Radiation Scanning Systems”, in which it once again demonstrated to interested parties the mobile System for radiation reconnaissance and monitoring RMG-AT2000, developed jointly with UVR LLC, used with an unmanned helicopter “ELECTRON 7”.

The report reflects the main advantages of using the system. The possibility of airborne remote radiation monitoring of containers in temporary storage warehouses, vehicles in queues and trains can significantly increase the level of detection of gamma radiation sources, taking into account the fact that currently used radiation detection portals usually do not register radiation above the scanned object.

UAV “COMBO” Control Algorithms Verification and Improvement

UVR LLC software development department specialists have conducted a series of scientific and practical studies in order to assess the performance of the applied automatic and command control algorithms of the of the UAV “COMBO”, as well as to increase their functional safety in case of short-term failures of the communication channel and interruption of the data exchange.

The purpose of the tests was to ensure the dynamic stability and stabilizing properties of the UAV “COMBO” control system in case of emergency situations, as well as during the transfer of control from one ground station to another.

The complete detailed simulation model of the UAV “COMBO” was used as an object of research. It had been previously verified by comparison with the full-scale tests of the basic Ka-26 helicopter. The verification had been carried out by comparing the flight control parameters of the basic helicopter and the ones of the model developed at UVR LLC.

UAV "COMBO" Control Algorithms Verification and Improvement

The results of the tests proved the operability of the applied autopilot algorithms, both standard and those developed by UVR LLC, the effectiveness of the software used to stabilize the flight and ensure the dynamic stability of the UAV “COMBO” in various emergency situations was confirmed. Also, the correctness of the introduction of restrictions on control actions on the angular velocity of the circuits was checked step by step: ROLL – up to 50000 o/c2, PITCH – up to 35000 o/c2, YAW – up to 45000 o/c2.

Improving the Quality of Control of the UVR UAVs by Using Simulation Analogues

UVR LLC specialists have taken another important step in improving the safety of testing and stability of helicopter-type unmanned aerial vehicles flights – their digital counterparts have been created. The models have been developed in a fairly short time and have already passed experimental verification while compared with piloted flights of prototypes.

These models are applicable both for operating prototypes of single-rotor helicopters with a tail rotor (gross weight up to 40 and 500 kg) and for coaxial configuration (gross weight up to 3,150 kg).

The models will allow conducting preliminary tests of aerial vehicles, determining and correcting their technical and dynamic characteristics, as well as setting acceptable parameters of control systems, which together will reduce the time and costs of testing, increasing the reliability and trustworthiness of the results.

Based on this approach, UVR LLC systematically continues the process of complex multi-parameter correction and improvement of engine control algorithms, pitch, roll, heading and height of the UAVs. At the same time, there is the possibility of an objective assessment for choosing a control loop scheme (either self-developed by UVR LLC, or a corrected ARDUPILOT scheme available in the public domain).

Virtual models can be used as simulators for comprehensive training, briefing, as well as for improving the skills of controlling aircraft of acting UAV operators.

New Swashplate for the UAV ELECTRON 7

UVR LLC has developed and manufactured a new design swashplate for a light UAV with an electric motor ELECTRON 7.

Compared to the current type of swashplate, the new version reduces the number of parts and components by 25 percent, which will significantly reduce assembly time, logistics and labor costs for the production of this unit in the future, as well as significantly reduce its cost.

100 percent of the materials and components used in the new swashplate are manufactured locally.

The new swashplate has been transferred to the flight test station for testing.

The Next Stage of Cooperation with the Ministry for Emergency Situations on the Use of UAV “ELECTRON 7” for the Tasks of Radiation Monitoring

On November 11, 2022 UVR LLC, together with UE ATOMTEX, conducted regular test flights of the light unmanned helicopter ELECTRON 7 equipped with gamma radiation detection equipment. The flights were carried out at the training ground of the “Institute of Retraining and Professional Development”, a branch of the University of Civil Protection of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus. The test flights were part of the program of the event held by the Ministry for Emergency Situations – the international practical seminar “Modern means and methods of responding to accidents with hazardous chemical and radioactive substances”, which was attended by representatives of the Ministry for Emergency Situations, various law enforcement and security agencies, and other organizations: https://mchs.gov.by/glavnoe/405260/

The flights were preceded by a report made by the director of ATOMTEX, which reflected the possibilities and prospects for the use of drones for radiation monitoring showing the example of the UAV ELECTRON 7.

During the flights of ELECTRON 7 held in various modes (changing altitude, speed, tack width, number of radiation sources), the joint team of UVR and ATOMTEX was improving the interaction of hardware and software when receiving and processing data on detected radiation sources.

The Next Stage of Cooperation with the Ministry for Emergency Situations on the Use of UAV "ELECTRON 7" for the Tasks of Radiation Monitoring

The use of a helicopter-type unmanned aerial vehicle for conducting radiation and chemical reconnaissance aroused high interest among the participants of the seminar, since this method significantly saves time, labor costs and expenditures for this kind of missions, at the same time reducing risks to the life and health of personnel.
